Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig, was released on July 21st, 2023. As of the date of this article, the film has grossed a record-breaking one billion dollars. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and touches on a vast majority of topics including sexism, feminism, patriarchy, humanity, and so much more. The film was colorful and fun yet still managed to tackle real issues in a subtle way. The reactions to these topics, however, vary based on one’s level of self-awareness and empathy. It’s no surprise if you look at the demographic of people who hated the film, meanwhile, we have someone such as Ryan Gosling who actively participated in, and praised it. Now I don’t know about you, but I choose Gosling.

“But I’m a Man” – Ken

When Ken enters the real world the movie drives home the point of learned misogyny and its impact. Ken had always been Barbie’s number one fan until he learned that he should resent her for not liking him back. That he should feel entitled to her love. On a larger scale, this represents how many young boys start off loving and innocent, just to grow up and let society change them. We all know a man who used to be a sweet boy and slowly turned into a misogynistic jerk. A man worth going on a second date with will see this in the movie and feel a sense of empathy and self-reflection. A man you need to leave in the theatre will go on about how the movie is painting men in a bad light, failing to understand that the movie mirrors our reality.

When the Kens took over the Barbie dreamhouses, they made it clear that it was out of vengeance. They believed that the Barbies were the bad guys because they ran everything and the Kens are essentially subjected to side characters. The irony in this is that Barbieland is the real world reversed. Men hold most positions of power and expect women to sit back and watch them shine. The difference though, is the Kens weren’t looking for equality they were looking for revenge. In real life, women just want to be equal and are still dismissed constantly. Women aren’t supposed to want more and fight for things like a man. This is even displayed at the end where instead of lashing out at him, Barbie actually apologizes to Ken for leading him on, meanwhile, Ken never apologized for taking over the government and stealing her house. Even in Barbie land, women are supposed to clean up messes and have endless amounts of forgiveness and empathy. A real man would watch this and recognize just how twisted things can be for a woman in our world today.

“Ready For Fun?” – Barbie

Finally, you should take your date to see Barbie because it’s simply a great movie. If you don’t have underlying issues the movie is a blast. It’s funny, heartwarming, and self-aware. Movie-going is back, and we have Barbie to thank for that. See you in Barbieland!
