On July 7th Taylor Swift released the re-recording of her hit album ‘Speak Now.’ On ‘Taylor’s Version’ of the album Swift includes an incredible vault track out of six, which Billboard ranked here, entitled ‘Castles Crumbling’ featuring Hayley Williams. On the track, Swift talks about feelings of being out of control and losing her sense of how things once were. “I was held up so high, I used to be great.” she sings. We recommend listening to the track as it conveys a feeling of hopelessness we all feel at one time or another. However, today we will be teaching you 5 things to do when you feel out of control. You got this!

Reflect on your priorities:

What is important to you? What needs to be done? Do you need to finish up your schoolwork? Work on your small business? Go to tennis practice? Whatever it is that you need to do, chalk it down as a non-negotiable. You’ll feel better knowing that you stuck to your commitments and kept some sort of structure.

Set realistic goals:

It’s likely you feel out of control because you are. Try to break things down into manageable pieces. Instead of saying you want to win an Oscar, say you want to win a local film festival and work toward that. Instead of saying you want to check off all your errands for the week, commit to finishing three. Break down your goals into smaller pieces. It will make things more manageable for you, and also give you a sense of accomplishment when you achieve one of these goals.

Declutter and organize:

Are you running late to things? Forgetting deadlines? Losing things? Take a deep breath and start over. Write out everything in your agenda, and declutter your space. The more organized you are, the more in control you’ll feel.

Establish routines:

Create daily routines and structures and stick to them. You don’t have to commit to too much as long as you actually do it. Will you go on a run each morning? Makeup your bed every day? Hit the gym after work? This will allow you to have little wins throughout the day and help you feel more organized and productive.

Practice gratitude:

I know that someone telling you to be grateful is one of the most annoying things, but we could all do better with it anyway. Try and shift your perspective and find positives within your situation. Is your job stressing you out? Didn’t you hope and pray for this job a year ago and beat out all those other applicants? It can be tough but if you find things to be grateful for, it becomes a little easier to cope with the bs. A little.
