The incredible Olivia Rodrigo recently released her first single from her sophomore album ‘Guts’ called ‘Vampire’ and it is incredible. So much so, according to Billboard, the single is “Set For Top Debut on U.K. Chart” Needless to say, If you haven’t listened already, I suggest you do so. However, besides the incredible production and lyricism, there is a strong theme of this song which is being sucked dry and used. The pure rage Rodrigo portrays is such a relatable feeling so many of us have dealing with relationships. So, to help avoid some heartache, today we will be using her song as a reference in finding out the top 6 signs you’re being used.
1. “Six months of torture that you sold as some forbidden paradise”
Do they try to convince you that you can’t do any better? That this is as good as it gets and you should just be grateful? They are SO good to you so of course you should loan them a hundred dollars that they’ll never pay back… NO. You don’t owe them anything and vice versa. It isn’t an honor to be in their presence, if anything it’s an honor for them to be in yours.
2. “I should have known it was strange”
Intuition. Trust your gut. (No pun intended!) Seriously though, deep down we always have that gut feeling. We often push it to the side because of how we are feeling at the moment. Maybe you had a nice date, maybe the sex was good, maybe they bought you a nice gift. However, just because there are good moments doesn’t mean the situation is good. Trust yourself, you know when things are wrong.
3. “You only come out at night”
In the literal sense, this could apply to someone you’re talking to only wanting to have sex or be with you at night time, aka when there is no commitment. In another sense, this could mean that they only want you on their terms. They don’t hang out with you when you want, or do anything that’s meaningful to you. It’s about them, their schedule, and their needs only.
4. “You sunk your teeth into me”
Do you drop everything for them? Stop spending time with your other friends? Isolation is a common tactic for users. It’s easier to get you to do and put up with things when there are no second opinions. Nobody to ring the alarm bells. Don’t let them trick you.
5. “I used to think I was smart you made me feel so naive”
Have you ever brought up a concern to them and they blew it off? Turned it around on you? Gaslit you even? Your self-awareness interferes with their operation. Whether it’s just using you for sex, money, popularity, or even just to make someone else jealous, your awareness scares them. Take a step back, you may realize just how deep in their bullshit you were.
6. “Bleeding me dry like a goddamn vampire”
Are you exhausted? Always catering to them and neglecting yourself? Always questioning if you’re overacting or not, questioning what’s real and what’s not. Relationships shouldn’t bleed you dry. It should be a give-and-take. If you constantly feel like this, know that you deserve so much better.
